Finding Your Calling Sweet Spot
In Jim Collin's report on social ventures for his classic business book'Good to Great', dozens of ministries and non-profits were investigated to learn the characteristics and habits of great setups. Unsurprisingly similar principles apply in both non-profit endeavors as in business, if you need to become great. One of his important findings is named the 'The Hedgehog Concept' : It helps to simplify a complicated changing world into one single unifying idea or mission (calling ) that underlies and guides everything in your life. He powerfully illustrates this idea with the story of the fox and the hedgehog. In his story the fox is a very cunning, creative, and graceful animal, well in a position to create complex strategies in pursuit of capturing the hedgehog. The hedgehog, on the other hand, simply defends himself from all of the attacks of the fox by curling himself into one impenetrable prickly ball that has the fox irritated each time. The hedgehog always survives in this game of life - by regularly doing the one successful action each time to succeed.
In his commended work,'Good to Great', Collins uses the choices of his hedgehog as a simple graphic to explain the victories of today's great contributors in life. Obviously most non-profit callings are not primarily driven by a nice profit motivation. Instead in the hedgehog image of the 3 circles, Economics is replaced by Mission or Service. Looking at it this way it becomes a powerful way of outlining what your calling IS, but more importantly what IT IS NOT!!!!! I can not stress that highly enough.
So many people following their calling feel obliged to do all and cover all the bases, the majority of which they are not gifted, motivated or graced to do. By employing the three circles, you'll be able to discover the sweet spot in life service, where you are best. The space where you spend the majority of your effort doing what you adore to do, do what you are good at doing ( your talents) and where it makes a difference (to your calling ). Powerful stuff. Not simply an idea but a realistic working compass to steer you in this arena of overpowering life choices and possibilities. God hasn't called you to attempt everything - do you agree? Yes. So which responsibilities does he NOT want you to be trying to do. How are you able to know that? This site will help you determine that in effective ways that God has revealed to you. Add to that the religious insight of yourself, your folks and your closest colleagues and you can't miss obtaining your sweet spot in life. Spend the remainder of your life in God's's will, not attempting to find it ( for your life and purpose at least ).
Any behaviors that take away energy from one's core concept in life need to be trimmed back. Defining your hedgehog idea isn't easy and can not always be accomplished overnite. However , it is a deserving exercise for everyone to do at least once in their life. When your core idea is outlined, all your decisions should be viewed thru the prism of this life outlining idea. If a ministry need, a promotion, a commitment, or opportunity doesn't brace your core ('one thing' ), then it needs to be thrown out. Your efforts will be luxuriously rewarded when your satisfactions and energies are unified toward a typical goal that ties in to your calling.
